What Does The Bean In Chicago Mean

3 shot, 1 killed near Millennium Park ‘Bean’

What does The Bean in Chicago mean? Formally known as Cloud Gate, Chicagos Bean is a mercury-inspired structural wonder of engineering, resulting from the artistic vision of Anish Kapoor in collaboration with a design and construction firm.

Because of its breath-taking all-aluminum body, Cloud Gate reflects a multitude of angles all at once, whether you find yourself in the astounding glamor beneath its 33-foot tall frame, or you gaze into the Chicago skyline reflected and distorted along its 66-foot span

Themes Of Cloud Gate Chicagos Reflection

At the right time of day and angle, Cloud Gate becomes indistinguishable from the sky. This warping of space and expectation is just part of the wonder that is The Bean. Kapoors work consistently works with limits and limitlessness, among many other topics of duality. Cloud Gate continues this public work as people find themselves alongside, seemingly, all of Chicago, all of the Lake, and all of its impressive architectural feats represented in the reflection of The Bean. Many viewers also question the sheer possibility of its construction, its seamlessness, and its ability to look featherlight when compared to its massive actual tonnage.

What’s Inside The Bean

During design and construction of Cloud Gate, the engineers tasked with bringing Sir Anish Kapoor’s vision to fruition faced numerous challenges. In considering building materials, stainless steel was quickly rejected due to its tendency to absorb heat from the surrounding environment. Heating during the day followed by cooling at night might well have led to cracks or other imperfections appearing on the sculpture’s surface and thereby ruining the design. Ultimately, engineers took inspiration from tried and true methods used in the shipbuilding industry and selected a wooden structure that could expand and contract with changes in temperature. Contrary to some urban legends, there is actually nothing contained inside the Bean aside from the basic structural elements, though at one point there was a rudimentary construction office located inside.

Grant Park Music Festival

The Grant Park Music Festival is an annual 10-week classical music concert series, which features the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and the Grant Park Chorus as well as guest performers and conductors. Since 2004, the festival has been housed in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park. On occasion, the festival has been held at the Harris Theater instead of the Pritzker Pavilion. The festival has earned non-profit organization status, and claims to be the nation’s only free, outdoor classical music series.

The Grant Park Music Festival has been a Chicago tradition since 1931, when Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak suggested free concerts to lift spirits of Chicagoans during the Great Depression. The tradition of symphonic Grant Park Music Festival concerts began in 1935. The 2004 season, during which the festival moved to the Pritzker Pavilion, was the event’s 70th season. Formerly, the Grant Park Music Festival was held at the Petrillo Music Shell in Grant Park.

Over time the festival has had various financial supporters, three primary locations and one name change. At times it has been broadcast nationally on the National Broadcasting Corporation and Columbia Broadcasting Service radio networks, and many of the world’s leading classical musicians have performed there. In 2000, the festival organizers agreed to release some of the concerts to the public via compact disc recordings.

Installation Of Burnham Pavilions In 2009

In 2009, architects Zaha Hadid and Ben van Berkel were invited to design and build two pavilions on the Chase Promenade South, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago. The pavilions were privately funded and were designed to be temporary structures. They served as the focal point of Chicago’s year-long celebration of Burnham’s Plan, and were meant to symbolize the city’s continued pursuit of the plan’s architectural vision.

The van Berkel Pavilion was composed of two parallel rectangular planes joined by curving scoops, all built on a steel frame covered with glossy white plywood. It was situated on a raised platform, which was sliced by a ramp entrance, making it ADA accessible. The Hadid Pavilion was a tensioned fabric shell fitted over a curving aluminum framework made of more than 7,000 pieces. A centennial-themed video presentation was projected on its interior fabric walls after dark.

I visited Chicago 19th Aug 2018. You can not park 12 seater – 15 seater car in 90% garage in Chicago. But, go for open parking lots. Its convenient as well. Mainly the issue is with the height of vehical, Most 12-15 seater are higher than 7 feet and most the of the garage allows 6.8″. The place where I parked was in dowtown 10-12 mins from cloud gate – 328 south schwab chicago. They charged $25 for 5 hours.

Good Luck…

What type of 15 passenger is this a “regular” van or the newer taller type? The old ones were things like the Ford Econoline and Chevy Express and weren’t horribly tall: usually low 7 foot in height. But some of those new “sprinter” style vans can get up towards the 9 foot height point.

The rear/east garage at Navy Pier is taller and will take things like normal 15 passenger vans or vehicles with cargo carriers on the roof. It’s the standard $29 parking rate whether you are there for an hour or all day long.

There isnt a Schwab Street in Chicago. Poster 3 probably meant Wabash.

328 S. Wabash is an open parking lot.

Whats The Bean Made Out Of

The exterior of The Bean is made entirely of stainless steel. It was created using computer technology to precisely cut 168 massive steel plates, which were then fitted together and welded shut for a completely seamless finish.

Inside, its made of a network of two large metal rings. The rings are connected via a truss framework, similar to what you might see on a bridge. This allows the sculptures massive weight to be directed to its two base points, creating the iconic bean shape and allowing for the large concave area beneath the structure.

The Beans steel exterior is attached to the inside frame with flexible connectors that let it expand and contract as the weather changes.
