PAWS Chicago has been an anchor in Chicago since it was established in 1997. At that time, very few people knew that homeless pets were being killed. Certainly, very few knew of the extent that more than 42,000 cats and dogs would die that year in Chicago shelters. PAWS Chicagos goal was to bring attention to the plight of homeless animals and to engage the community in finding solutions to pet overpopulation.Since then, PAWS has continued to focus on engaging people to take action to save homeless pets. With volunteers, foster families, adopters, outreach initiatives, and free or subsidized spay/neuter and medical services, we work to mobilize and inspire people to become a part of the solution for homeless animals. PAWS Chicagos ongoing success is a result of our commitment to our grounding principle of community engagement. It is only by raising awareness of pet homeless and engaging people in these efforts, can we make lasting change.

How To Schedule An Appointment
Appointments for rescue groups are always required. Please call 640-5184 to make an appointment.
Schedule for the Day of Surgery
- 7:00 a.m. | Deadline to email the finalized list of patients and additional services requested. Once this list is submitted, it cannot be changed.
- 8:00 10:00 a.m. | Rescue group check-in in the front lobby. This process will take approximately one hour. All cats must come in their own carrier. If a group needs additional carriers, cardboard carriers are available for $5 each.
- 4:00 5:00 p.m. | Pick-up time unless told otherwise by clinic staff. This process will last approximately 30 minutes. We do not keep patients overnight.

General Spay/neuter Surgery Information
Age limitations for spay/neuter are the same for any surgery requiring general anesthesia. A pre-surgical blood panel is required to assess health issues or risks for pets 6 years old and older. The results will be available same day. If there are any medical concerns, you will need to authorize that we proceed with spay/neuter after understanding the risks. In the event your petâs blood levels are not within a normal range, our veterinarians may elect to cancel the surgery for your petâs safety.
The surgery itself will not cause your pet to become fat or lazy, nor will it cause a negative change in your petâs personality. In fact, your pet may become easier to live with. Learn more about the benefits of spay/neuter.
Yes. We can still perform spay surgery on pets that are in heat. However, there may be an additional charge due to additional complications and costs. When scheduling your appointment, please let us know your pet is in heat so we can provide an accurate quote.

How did your organization get started? Upon learning about the euthanasia epidemic in Chicago, PAWS Chicago was established in 1997 by Paula Fasseas, Founder and Chair. PAWS Chicago is the citys largest No Kill humane organization, focused on alleviating Chicagos tragic pet homelessness problem.

Since PAWS Chicagos founding, the number of homeless pets killed in the city has been reduced by more than half, from 42,561 pets killed in 1997 to 19,288 in 2008. PAWS Chicago envisions a No Kill Chicago and that dream is within reach because of important lifesaving work that is being done every single day.

This will be accomplished by:
Providing accessible free or low-cost spay/neuter services through the PAWS Chicago Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic. The clinic provides free or low-cost spay/neuter services in the low-income communities where the majority of stray and unwanted pets originate. Since opening our doors, we have spayed/neutered over 80,000 cats and dogs. In 2008, we performed over 15,000 surgeries, the majority at no cost.

is where ill and contagious animals receive treatment in the nations premier hospital for homeless pets. Founded by the Duffield Family, Maddies Fund has transformed animal sheltering, providing leadership and funding to the No Kill movement. They recognized PAWS Chicagos leadership and vision with a generous $2.5 million gift, truly giving the most needy and at-risk homeless pets a second chance at life. Comprising the Medical Centers second floor, the Maddies® Pet Hospital includes Quarantine and Isolation Pavilions, exam rooms, lab, pharmacy, and play spaces along with a best-in-industry medical team.

LITTLE VILLAGE Animals are front and center at PAWS Chicago including at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the completion of its medical center expansion.

What was at one time a bank building, then a PAWS spay and neuter clinic, is now a 30,000-square-foot full-service hospital that can treat 200 cats and dogs on any given day and provide community care to several hundred more in its community clinic, said PAWS founder Paula Fasseas. The center will treat animals from Chicago and 13 high-kill states.
A medical center operating at the scale of PAWS which will be able to serve 25,000 cats and dogs each year is unique, said PAWS CEO Susanna Homan.

Shelter Medicine
Our state-of-the-art shelter medicine program uses lifesaving medical practices to provide every animal with full medical treatment, regardless of his condition.
Our Medical Center is each pets first stop. For healthy pets, its where they receive medical exams, vaccinations, microchips and spay/neuter surgeries. For sick or injured pets who require more intensive care, it is a hospital that treats every pet as an individual, giving them the nurturing, treatment and rehabilitation needed to live a happy, optimal life.
Foster Care
Many puppies and kittens need time to grow before being spayed or neutered and available for adoption. Other pets require time to recuperate from an illness or injury or time to build confidence and acclimate to living in a home environment. Sometimes they just need a break from shelter life. Our loving foster families welcome animals into their homes and give them the love and care they need to become ready for adoption.

Groups that provide spay and neuter surgeries for pets and may be able to help with the cost of the procedure. Some also provide additional low cost veterinary services.

A.D.O.P.T. recognizes the importance of spay/neuter and wellness for all companion animals. A.D.O.P.T. provides affordable spay/neuter surgeries to all pet owners in hopes that no companion animal will be denied wellness care because of expense. Services are provided by appointment only. In addition to providing spay/neuter services for other shelters and rescues, A.D.O.P.T. is working in partnership with DuPage County to help low income families. Any resident of DuPage County who meets the state income guidelines for public assistance to receive state aid can get a voucher from the county that can be used at A.D.O.P.T. for free spay or neuter services.

The Judith White Intake & Triage Center
Is the first stop for every newly rescued animal coming to PAWS Chicago. Last year, long-term supporters Miles and Kim White made a generous $1.5 million gift to memorialize Miles mother, an animal welfare advocate and rescuer.
It houses all non-contagious animals, including those waiting for or recovering from surgery. Judith White committed so much of her life to helping animalsnow thousands each year will be cared for in the center bearing her name.
