Chicago Or Phantom Of The Opera
this will be our first show – we want to go to Broadway – any tips on which shows are best?
We will be in NYC from 10th Dec to 17th Dec.
Ive seen Phantom three times, and am planning to go back for my 4th time next month. I’ve seen Chicago and liked it, but have no plan to go back.
I have seen both and definately liked phantom better.
Chicago was one of the greatest shows, and this production is stark and intense. And very, very tired. I’ve been many times to both shows, and the last time I saw Chicago the performers were sleep-walking through. Zero energy. Yet, even though Phantom’s been running for around 17 years, it’s gorgeous.
My other choice would be Hairspray.
Agree with Bettina about Hairspray, I also love Fiddler on the Roof, which will be closing in January.
Can’t say that I loved Phanton, but to each his/her own. Most people love it, I didn’t.
Wicked is also very good, as is The Lion King& Beauty & the Beast.
Chicago for dance, Phantom for song and plot.
Definitely Phantom. Chicago was good, but I love the story of Phatom even though it doesn’t follow the book well.
Also, The Odd Couple opens this month if you are interested.
You really have to be in a certain type of mood for The Phatom of the Opera. It is great, but I will not reccomend it for a first timer.
Chicago is great as well, but I will not reccomend to the conservative or religious frame of minds.
The Lion King is my vote. It has the best costumes, dancing, singing, and excitement.

Local audiences have one last chance to capture “The Phantom of the Opera” at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre — at least in its current traveling form.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s global blockbuster musical returns for the third time in director Laurence Connor’s 2012 touring version from Dec. 18 to Jan. 5. Then, his “Phantom” moves on to Toronto, where it closes in February.
That’s according to two local actors who star in supporting roles. Susan Moniz of Des Plaines plays strict ballet mistress Madame Giry. She somehow knows secrets to the murderous Phantom , who obsessively stalks rising soprano star Christine Daaé .
Meanwhile, Chicago actor Rob Lindley plays Monsieur André opposite David Benoit as Monsieur Firmin, the new co-managers of the “Opera Populaire” . Lindley describes Firmin as the money man, while André is more of an artistic director.
“Phantom” is Lindley’s first tour, and he’s been with it for almost two years. For someone used to beginning productions from scratch, Lindley had to learn fast on his feet.
“But within that, the creative team welcomes your own individual artistic expression,” Lindley said. “It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before.”
