The Listening Room is a new bar and listening cafe in the Loop. Whats a listening cafe, you ask? Taken from their website, its a clubby dining experience with a state-of-the-art audio experience. But it turns out its not very clubbyits more of an upscale cafe that works perfectly for a pre-show dinner. Plus, the food is very good. The menu has dishes like tender chicken thighs with crispy skin, mac and cheese that gets melted raclette poured over it tableside, and some very interesting roasted carrots served with a fluffy coconut mousse and topped with peanuts. The listening part really just means that the sound quality is really good, and the music genre changes, so check their to see what theyre playing before you visit.
This casual Cuban spot attached to a busy hostel is great if you want to grab something quick before seeing a show at the Auditorium Theatre. Cafecito is right next door and the best things on the menu are the sandwiches, which are ideal right before a matinee. We like rotating between the classic Cubano and the Guava with tender roasted pork or chicken, covered in a tangy guava BBQ sauce. They serve wine and beer, but the cafe con leche is a good option if you need to stay awake through the first act of Atlas Shrugged: The Musical.

Best Barbecue: Blackwood Bbq
Blackwood BBQ proves you dont have to go to Kansas City or Memphis to get mouthwatering barbecue. Imagine hand-rubbed beef brisket with a signature blend of spices and smoked for 15 hours. Even the mac and cheese gets four hours of attention before the homemade cheesy goodness hits your plate.
If the smoky barbecue flavor isnt enough to tempt you, the quality products may. Blackwood BBQ sources its meat from farms it knows. It uses fresh meats, including pork without added hormones and antibiotics. Stop in before or after a show to get your barbecue fix right here in Chicago.
Best Seafood: Lukes Lobster
Dreaming of a trip to the shores of Maine? A stop at Lukes Lobsters on your way to the Chicago Theatre makes you feel like youre there, if only for a few fleeting moments. Lukes Lobsters started in New York from an idea created by Mainer Luke Holden. After sampling the lobster rolls available in New York, he knew he could do it better. He ditched the overwhelming mayo and fillers found in most of the rolls to focus on the lobster, and its all served on a griddled, split-top bun.
What makes the lobster rolls from Lukes Lobster so special aside from the lack of fillers and mayo mask? The company uses only traceable, sustainable seafood directly from the source in Maine. That lobster is then processed in Maine at Lukes seafood company before being bagged and sent to the restaurant locations. Were glad Luke decided to bring his seafood to the Midwest with the Chicago Lukes Lobster location. Delicious, sustainable lobster straight from Maine without leaving Chicago? Yes, please!
