Chicago Public Schools Calendar: Cps Plans August Start Date For 2022
CPS school would start August 22, even earlier than last year
Both options have class resuming before Labor Day.
CHICAGO — Chicago Public Schools are planning to have students return for the 2022-2023 school year even earlier this year.
CPS is proposing a start date of Monday, August 22. The state’s largest school district said this calendar aligns more closely with the academic calendars of suburban school districts and local colleges and universities.
– A school start date of Monday, Aug. 22, 2022 and an end date of Wednesday, June 7, 2023
– Students complete their first semester prior to Winter Break on Friday, Dec. 22, 2022
– A less even distribution of instructional days and weeks across the four quarters of the school year, due to the completion of first semester prior to Winter Break.
The first day of school in the 2021-22 academic year was Aug. 30, a shift from the usual start date of the Tuesday after Labor Day.
CPS CEO Pedro Martinez joined ABC7 Chicago live last month to talk about the change, before choosing to recommend a date.
He said the new CPS start date seeks to “start the year earlier, consolidate report card pick up, and continue to offer important staff professional development and collaboration time for our faculty and staff.”
The Chicago Board of Education will vote on the new school calendar during its monthly meeting Wednesday.
An Earlier Start Cps Asks Parents To Weigh In On 2022
This is the first time CPS families have been invited to weigh in on the calendar, CEO Pedro Martinez said in the letter sent out Thursday.
CHICAGO Chicago Public Schools is asking parents to weigh in on possible changes to the 2022-2023 academic year.
The district is inviting parents to select one of two options through a survey. The changes would either keep the calendar similar to the 2021-22 year or move the start date a week early, according to a letter from CEO Pedro Martinez.
The survey will close on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5 p.m.
This is the first time CPS families have been invited to weigh in on the calendar, Martinez said in the letter sent out Thursday.
Under option number 1, which mirrors the current school year:
- The academic year would begin Monday, Aug. 29, 2022 and end Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
- The first semester would end after winter break in January 2023.
Under option number 2, which would line up with other suburban school districts and local colleges and universities, includes:
- The academic year would begin Monday, Aug. 22, 2022 and end Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
- The first semester would end before winter break on Friday, Dec. 22, 2022.
Both options will begin before Labor Day and include 176 days of student instruction, 12 professional learning days for teachers, and one parent-teacher conference day for high school and elementary school students in the fall and another in the spring.

New Calendar Again Begins Before Labor Day, Consolidates Report Card Pick Up, Give Students a Thanksgiving Week Break
CHICAGO Chicago Public Schools is putting forth a proposal for the School Year 2022-23 academic calendar, which will be voted on at Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting. The proposal comes after the District solicited feedback from students, parents, staff, and community members via a survey in February.
Nearly 200 principals initially met in focus groups to inform the design of next years calendar. The CPS community – parents, administrators, teachers, staff, and students – were then given two options to choose from, both of which aimed to start the year earlier, provide a consolidated report card pick up, and continue to offer important staff professional development – including two additional days – for our faculty and staff.
Many elements of the two options were the same, with a few key differences. Votes were nearly evenly split, with 24,409 votes for option one, and 24,001 votes for the second option. Because the vote was so close, District leadership is recommending option two, reflecting the preference of 69 percent of administrators, 62 percent of school leaders , 58 percent of central office/network office staff, and nearly 56 percent of students.
The option that was not chosen started and ended a week later and the first semester ended after students returned from Winter Break.

However, families also have the option to choose remote learning and attend class from home. Check the reopening guide for details on in-person classes attendance, remote learning, mask guidance, testing, and health screenings. Chicago Public School Holidays 2021
In todays date, Chicago Public School provides education to more than 396,683 students with 21,729 teachers including 37,322 staff member in the school. The vision of this school is to ensure all the children to learn and commit to achieving high standards of learning in a related field. From the management side, Janice K. Jackson was appointed as the Superintendent of the school which has brought a lot more excellent school system.
The best part of what I like about them is the education system they provide to their students. Chicago Public School has a ratio of 17 to 1 between the students and the staff which helps in keeping focus in each and every individual person. Their staff are excellent they help anybody who is there any problem, you can directly contact them without any permission.
The Chicago Public School is very open and friendly which provide opportunities and experiences offered are great. When I was young it was my dream to have an education in this school but it was my bad luck, I couldnt qualify for their exams. Its my request for all the students who are currently studying in this campus that please have a proper education from them because the staff member is the best from all the remaining one.

Forty Percent Of Cps Schools To See Budget Cuts Amid Enrollment Declines
Chicago Public Schools students are due back Aug. 22, in what would be the districts earliest start in recent memory. The proposed calendar represents a drastic departure from tradition.
The school system, the nations third-largest, for years has opened its doors after Labor Day, even as suburban districts moved their start dates earlier into August over the past decade.
This year CPS opened a week early for the full return to in-person learning that pre-Labor Day start marked its earliest in almost a decade.
Besides starting on Aug. 22, the proposed schedule has the last day as June 7. The proposed schedule will be up for Board of Education approval at Wednesdays monthly meeting. That adds up to 176 student attendance days with four teacher institute days, four school improvement days, two report card pickup days and four teacher professional development days.
For the first time, students would get a full week off for Thanksgiving break instead of the usual three days. First semester finals would be completed before winter break, with a clean start to the new semester in January. That would mean days and weeks are less evenly distributed over the four quarters of the school year, but the calendar would align more closely with those of suburban districts and local colleges and universities. Spring break would be the week of April 3.
