In a milestone for a project more than a decade in the making, St. Anthony Hospital will relocate to a 29-acre campus in Little Village under zoning rules a City Council committee endorsed Tuesday.
The new hospital would be built at 3201 W. 31st St., the former site of the Washburne Trade School, on a campus that would include a surgical center, office building, retailers, a vocational school and athletic fields.
The councils Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards unanimously endorsed the project, first aired during the administration of Mayor Richard M. Daley. It is expected to be brought before the full council Wednesday for final approval.

St. Anthony would build a 12-story, 151-bed hospital. The number of beds is the same as at the existing hospital at 2875 W. 19th St. Guy Medaglia, St. Anthony president, said he is talking to operators interested in using that building for senior residences.
Medaglia told the Sun-Times he now estimates the project will cost $700 million, up from prior estimates of $600 million because of inflation. It would be funded from a mix of loans, donations and grants. He said hes already put up $3 million to cover an environmental cleanup on old industrial parcels next to the Washburne property.

Police Investigating After Two Boaters Disappeared After Setting Sail From East Chicago Marina
The woman called her husband to pick her up from the hospital. The discharge nurse noticed she was anxious and tried to convince her to stay to finish needed testing, but the woman checked herself out of the hospital.
A day later, the woman told a home healthcare worker and her husband about the abuse. She went to UIC Hospital and a sexual assault exam was given.
A spokesperson for St. Anthony did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
Chicago police said the investigation into Childs was ongoing and anyone with information was asked to contact Area Four Violent Crimes division at 746-8251 to file a report.
Childs has not made any admissions of guilt and prosecutors did not mention any physical evidence linking him to the assaults during the hearing, his defense attorney told the judge.
She asked for a reasonable bail, noting that Childs had known of the allegations, had not tried to flee and was about to start a new job.
Judge Burns said he believed there was no amount of bail that could ensure the communitys safety and further ordered Childs to have no contact with the victims or anyone at St. Anthony.
Childs was expected back in court April 11.

Illinois moved its Medicaid program from a feeforservice model, where a state agency pays providers medical bills, to one dominated by managed care, where private insurers pay medical bills. Most patients of Saint Anthony Hospital are covered by Medicaid, so Saint Anthony depends on Medicaid payments. Over the last four years, it has lost roughly 98% of its cash reserves, allegedly because managedcare organizations have repeatedly and systematically delayed and reduced Medicaid payments to it. Saint Anthony sued, arguing that Illinois officials owe it a duty under the Medicaid Act to remedy the late and short payments. The Seventh Circuit reversed the dismissal of the suit, concluding that Saint Anthony has alleged a viable claim for relief under 42 U.S.C. 1396u 2 and may seek injunctive relief under 42 U.S.C. 1983 against the state official who administers the Medicaid program in Illinois. Illinois has tools available to remedy systemic slow payment problemsproblems alleged to be so serious that they threaten the viability of a major hospital and even of the managedcare Medicaid program as administered in Illinois. If Saint Anthony can prove its claims, the chief state official could be ordered to use some of those tools to remedy systemic problems that threaten this literally vital health care program.

LITTLE VILLAGE A former St. Anthony Hospital executive is suing the facility, saying leaders fired her after she protested gender discrimination and retaliation from its CEO, and alleging the hospital used pay-to-play schemes.
Stella Sosa Wolf, who was the head of human resources, filed the federal lawsuit in June. She worked at the hospital from 2016 until she was fired in June 2020.
Wolf alleges she was ousted after confronting CEO Guy Medaglia about inappropriate and illegal behavior towards women and insistence on hiring politically connected employees and vendors in a seeming exchange for state funding and other support, according to the lawsuit.
Ryan B. Jacobson, attorney and hospital spokesperson, said the allegations were meaningless without the evidence to support them.
‘milking Medicaid’ Bga Report Cited In Ruling Allowing Safety Net Hospitals To Sue Over Payments

A federal appeals court ruled St. Anthony Hospital on Chicago’s Southwest Side can sue over millions of unpaid Medicaid bills, the BGA said.
CHICAGO — Earlier this week, a federal appeals court ruled an Illinois hospital can sue over Medicaid payments.
The decision comes after St. Anthony Hospital on Chicago’s Southwest Side filed a lawsuit against state officials.
In its ruling, the court cited an investigation by the Better Government Association, “Milking Medicaid,” which looked into the impact of privatizing the state’s health care system.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ruled Saint Anthony Hospital “alleged a viable claim for relief” when it sued state officials for not adequately overseeing the insurance companies they contracted as managed care organizations, according to the BGA.
“In nutshell, St. Anthony is saying this is really a system that’s largely bereft of government oversite, said David Jackson of the BGA. “The for-profit companies, the insurance firms, are boosting their profits by denying and reducing reimbursements to providers like St. Anthony’s.”
The decision opens the door for safety net hospitals for the underserved to recover millions of dollars in Medicaid payments.
“It’s not just a lot of money at stake,” said Jackson. “These providers represent illinois’ most vulnerable citizens. Low ioncome families, foster children, pregnant women, elderly people.
