East Chicago Activists Want Community Ceo To Assuage Fears About St Catherine That Healthcare System Says Will Not Close
St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago is shown.
Ever since Franciscan Health announced it planned to radically scale back the former St. Margaret Hospital in downtown Hammond earlier this year, fears have swirled around East Chicago that the 93-year-old St. Catherine Hospital in north Lake County could meet the same fate.

Community Healthcare System said it has no plans to close the nonprofit general hospital at 4321 Fir St. in East Chicago.
“We are unsure why these rumors are circulating, but St. Catherine Hospital is not closing, converting to a behavioral health hospital or being sold,” Community Hospital spokeswoman Elise Sims said. “A dedicated member of East Chicago and its surrounding communities for nearly 100 years, St. Catherine Hospital continues to invest in major hospital improvements as health care evolves to better serve patients and address their needs. We greatly appreciate our staffs passion, pride and dedication to deliver the highest quality care to area residents. We will continue our mission to serve our community.”
But activists have expressed concerns about St. Catherine, rallying outside the hospital Tuesday.

‘people Have Been Knocking On Our Door’
Parlay Grill and Catering will seat about 20 people in its dining room, including on community-dining wood tables that will seat four or five people each. The owners are seeking a beer and wine license.
“We want to represent breweries like Wildrose and all those guys in the community,” Barnes said.
The restaurant also will offer takeout and delivery through Uber Eats and GrubHub.
Initially, the 1,600-square-foot restaurant will employ just the chef and his fiance in the front of the house.
“We liked the historic downtown area,” Barnes said. “The Rock ‘N’ Rail Festival is right outside. It’s the center of the community. You can feel it right there on the main drag.”
Townspeople have been excited to get another dining option.
“People have been knocking on our door since we put black plastic on it, asking what’s opening,” he said.
It will be open 2-10 p.m. every day but Monday.

When Phylis Butler Mamula started searching for a new place to call home for her and her mother, having access to good health care was at the top of her list.
The Lost Marsh subdivision in North Hammond with its proximity to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago fit her needs the best, she said Tuesday as a group of women gathered near St. Catherine.
The group was protesting what they believe is the hospitals lack of transparency regarding its fate.
Rumblings over moves hospital administrators have made recently, however, are now keeping Mamula up at night.
used to have offices in the hospital and they were asked to go into private practice and one believes thats the first step to winding things down, Mamula said. Im now having panic attacks about what would happen if St. Catherine closes.
If Id known this before, Im not sure Id have chosen North Hammond.
The protesters among them East Chicago Council members Debra Bolanos, D-At large and Monica Guzman Gonzalez, D-1st have also heard the rumblings and are especially concerned about the hospitals catherization lab.
Heart attacks dont stop after 4 p.m. on the weekdays, Mamula added.
