Strauss’s Interpretation Of Plato’s Republic
According to Strauss, The Republic by Plato is not “a blueprint for regime reform” . Strauss quotes Cicero: “The Republic does not bring to light the best possible regime but rather the nature of political things–the nature of the city.”
Strauss argued that the city-in-speech was unnatural, precisely because “it is rendered possible by the abstraction from eros“. Eros means bodily needs. Though skeptical of “progress”, Strauss was equally skeptical about political agendas of “return”–that is, going backward instead of forward.
In fact, he was consistently suspicious of anything claiming to be a solution to an old political or philosophical problem. He spoke of the danger in trying finally to resolve the debate between rationalism and traditionalism in politics. In particular, along with many in the pre-World War II German Right, he feared people trying to force a world state to come into being in the future, thinking that it would inevitably become a tyranny. Hence he kept his distance from the totalitarianisms of his century, the right-wing fascists and the left-wing communists.

Survey Measures Whites Blacks Views On American Identity Guns Political Violence
A recent national survey from University of Illinois Chicago researchers found strong consensus both across and within white and Black populations in the U.S., and transcending political party lines, when freedom of speech, voting rights, respect for institutions, and peaceful resolution of political conflict were considered as key dimensions of what it means to be American.
Conversely, the survey, which also examines views on the role of firearms and political violence in American political life, police funding, the 2020 presidential election and Donald Trumps legacy, reveals considerable disagreement on the use of violence in certain settings.
The online survey was conducted between May 20 and June 1, 2021 by YouGov on behalf of the UIC research group led by Alexandra Filindra, UIC associate professor of political science. It included 1,500 respondents, with 1,000 white and 500 Black participants to serve as a representative sample of the national population for those two groups. Co-authors include UIC political science graduate students Andrea Manning, Isaac Pollert, and Sebastian Tobon-Palma.

Department Of Political Science And Harris School Of Public Policy Launch New Political Economy Phd Program
The University of Chicagos Department of Political Science and Harris School of Public Policy have teamed up to introduce a new PhD program in political economy that offers aspiring scholars an extraordinary opportunity to study political institutions and behavior, guided by a group of 22 world-class faculty with a broad range of research interests in both empirical and theoretical topics.
This new standalone program is distinct from the PhD program offerings from Harris and Political Science and will provide accelerated training for students eager to apply tools such as game theory and empirical methods for causal inference to the study of politics. With the advent of the new program, Harris will no longer offer the political economy track of its PhD program.
With a curriculum expressly tailored to questions in political economy, a supportive group of outstanding faculty, and immersion in the rich seminar culture of the University of Chicago, the program creates a unique intellectual environment that will rank among the worlds best destinations for those studying political economy, said Scott Gehlbach, a professor with appointments at both Harris Public Policy and Political Science, who serves as director of the new PhD program.

Writing Requirement: Two Options
Students who are majoring in political science must write at least one substantial paper. There are two ways to meet this requirement, by writing a BA Thesis or by submitting a Long Paper.
2.a The Long Paper. The Long Paper is typically a course paper. It may be written for either a professor in political science, a professor in another department whose course is accepted for political science credit, or for an advanced graduate student who teaches courses in the political science department. Students who write a Long Paper are not required to write a BA Thesis. Students submitting a Long Paper must bring an approval form to the departmental office signed by an instructor who verifies that the paper meets two requirements: the paper is twenty pages or longer, double spaced the paper received a grade of B or better .
The Long Paper might be:
- A class paper for any course used to meet the major’s requirements.
- An extended version of a shorter paper written for a course. If a course requires a shorter paper, students may ask the instructor for permission to write a twenty-page paper instead.
If the paper is not a graded assignment for class, it still meets the department’s requirement if the instructor attests that it merits a grade of B or better. Unless the paper is written for a graded class assignment, students must ask the instructor’s permission to submit any such paper.

Encounters With Schmitt And Kojve

Two significant political-philosophical dialogues Strauss had with living thinkers were those he held with Carl Schmitt and Alexandre Kojève. Schmitt, who would later become, for a short time, the chief jurist of Nazi Germany, was one of the first important German academics to review Strauss’s early work positively. Schmitt’s positive reference for, and approval of, Strauss’s work on Hobbes was instrumental in winning Strauss the scholarship funding that allowed him to leave Germany.
Strauss’s critique and clarifications of The Concept of the Political led Schmitt to make significant emendations in its second edition. Writing to Schmitt in 1932, Strauss summarised Schmitt’s political theology that “because man is by nature evil, he therefore needs dominion. But dominion can be established, that is, men can be unified only in a unity against–against other men. Every association of men is necessarily a separation from other men… the political thus understood is not the constitutive principle of the state, of order, but a condition of the state.”
Kojève, a senior civil servant in the French government, was instrumental in the creation of the European Economic Community. He argued that philosophers should have an active role in shaping political events. Strauss, on the contrary, believed that philosophers should play a role in politics only to the extent that they can ensure that philosophy, which he saw as mankind’s highest activity, can be free from political intervention.
