Learn More About One Of Chicago’s Most Iconic Historic Hotels
The White City. The Second City. The City of the Big Shoulders. The Hog Butcher for the World. The City That Works. It goes by many vivid names. Chicago grew to prominence as a quintessential American city, full of noise, color, commerce, and creativity. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire laid waste to the city, but triumph came from tragedy and the new Chicago became an emblem of America to come in the Gilded Age.
In the following years, Chicago transformed into a city on par with New York, proudly appropriating the moniker given to them in derision of their loudmouthed lobbyists and politicians – “The Windy City.” Cultures from around the world were summoned to the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, where The White City acted as the backdrop to images of the future and planted the seeds of the City Beautiful movement in modern city planning. As other manufacturing cities went into decline, Chicago rose from the ashes of post-industrial America.
During the grand reopening of 1995, March 24th was proclaimed The Whitehall Day in the State of Illinois by the Honorable Jim Edgar, Governor. The most recent renovation has consolidated The Whitehall’s place as an iconic, historic hotel in Chicago, and earned Fortune Magazines recognition as one of the eight great small hotels in the United States, while Travel & Leisure commended the historic hotel as one of Chicagos five great hotels.”

Hotels: Acme Or Whitehall

I’ve read all the reviews and still can’t make up my mind.
Would you rather stay ACME or
ACME – 15 East Ohio Street
Whitehall – 105 E Delaware Place
Coin toss?

The Whitehall is in a much quieter location and is several blocks farther north than the Acme in the Gold Coast.
The Acme is on a very busy street farther south and caters to a younger crowd. The vibe of the 2 hotels is quite different.

Would it matter if I’m staying Tuesday-Thursday? i.e. is the difference in ‘vibe’ more apparent on weekends?
and when you say Whitehall is in a ‘quieter’ area, do you mean ‘serene’ or ‘desolate’? thx

Delaware St is a leafy posh quiet side street w/ few, businesses in the block. Not desolate. Acme is on Ohio St which is wider, more businesses along it, more lanes of traffic and the street gets a lot of vehicles exiting off the expressway.
Old enough to legally drink alcohol
Cheers
I stayed at the ACME when I was 6 months pregnant in Dec 2019 and had a very comfortable stay. We had a full-on suite with a living room and bedroom, and it was super comfortable.

suzanochkaAlicia went above and beyond!Alicia was so helpful to us. When our air flight was diverted due to weather, she waived the first night charge even though we were well within the 24 hour rule. She also printed out our Art Institute tickets for us and had great suggestions for restaurants. She made our stay so enjoyable because she really cared.
Duncan OldhamA Perfect StayI travelled to Chicago for the first time from Spain. I stayed at The Whitehall twice, once in April 2022 and once in May 2022. This hotel was in a great location. It was clean and it met my needs. It felt secure and I felt safe walking the streets at night nearby. The staff were very friendly and helpful and check-in on each occasion was very fast. There was everything you could need around this hotel. This hotel will be my place of choice each time I visit Chicago. In fact, I am returning in August and placed a new reservation yesterday.
Molly SOverall goodFriendly front desk staff. Shout out to Alicia specifically. Charming decor. Loved the old hotel vibe. Appreciated the size of the suite. Only thing preventing 5 stars is that rooms aren’t cleaned daily. That may be due to pandemic staffing issues. Would stay here again. Good location for a Chicago first timer.
