Things To Do In Chicago When It Rains

Richard H Dreihaus Museum

Taste of Chicago 2012 – Tourism – Things to do

Ive read so many things to do in Chicago posts over the years, and Im shocked at how few people seem to know about this incredible house museum. You guys, I LOVE the Dreihaus Museum. Commissioned by the Nickerson family in 1879, this is a true Gilded Age mansion, both in name and style. The entire ground floor is the definition of opulent the main hall is made almost entirely of marble and is outfitted with a wide staircase that curves up the second floor, and the gallery off of the library is topped by a breathtaking stained glass dome.

Guided tours add $5 to the ticket price, but the extra few bucks are worth it. If you dont go on a guided tour, youll learn only a fraction of the homes history and you wont be able to ask nitty gritty details about the house and its inhabitants. Set aside two hours to take a tour and leisurely go back through the house at your own pace trust me, this will be one of the coolest indoor activities in Chicago you do!

Bahai House Of Worship

You can be forgiven if youve never heard of Bahai, an obscure but fascinating religion that came from the Middle East.

Despite its millions of practitioners, it only has a handful of temples and prayer houses around the globe.

The amazing thing is that Illinois has one.

In fact, Illinois has the oldest and largest one, and its the only of its kind in North America.

The architecture is magnificent.

A lace-patterned dome sits on top of nine pillars that come together to form its center.

Inside, there are painted murals and stained glass windows.

Outside, there are pools, gardens, fountains and other gentle and tranquil spaces.

The Bahai House of Worship is one of the most unique Chicago attractions that you can put on your itinerary.

You dont have to be religious to appreciate its beauty, history and serenity.

Itll fill you with wonder whether you believe like the Bahai or not, so its absolutely a place to visit while youre in Illinois.

Getting Around During Chicago Rainfall

Its not just the rain that can put a damper on a summer vacation in Chicago. Tucked along the western shore of Lake Michigan, humidity levels average 71 percent year-round. Combined with temperatures that reach into the 90s, you can end up soaked to the skin even when theres not a cloud in the sky. Fortunately, the Chicago Pedway, a network of bridges, tunnels and ground-level walkways, runs through 40 blocks of downtown, giving climate-controlled access to more than 50 buildings and attractions. Carry a folding umbrella in your day-pack or purse, however, in case you want to access a business or attraction outside the PedWays protection.

The best time to explore the PedWay is Monday through Friday between the hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Many parts of the system are open on Saturday, but parts of the PedWay that pass through the basements of government buildings, for example, are closed. Study the map carefully on Sunday, when roughly half of the PedWay shutters for the day.

Check out a dazzling display of back-lit American Victorian stained glass at the basement entrance to Macys or surface in The Chicago Cultural Center or Millennium Park. Or head over to Chase Tower, which was once home to Sidley Austin law firm, one of the most prestigious and oldest law firms in the country. President Barack Obama met his wife, Michelle, there when she was assigned to mentor him when he came to work for the company as a first-year law student.

The Harold Washington Library is the largest public library in the world! You can spend your day reading. Head to the top of the building where the skylines will show all of the rain that isnt falling on your head. The music section has personal practice rooms that you can play the piano or sing to with your choice of sheet music! The library often holds special events and exhibits as well. Explore the many floors to find history relics and art.

Find Open But Covered Areas For Portraits

Skylord Travel

There are many open air, covered areas around the city that work well when we need portrait locations. Places like courtyards with covered walkways, buildings with large overhangs pretty much anything that offers shelter from the elements while still allowing natural light. Ive included a list of my favorites below, but know that on rainy Saturdays theyll be busy with other weddings as well.

Explore Downtown Via The Pedway

Did you know that Chicago has indoor walkways branching throughout the heart of the city? The downtown pedestrian way system is called the Pedway, and it covers more than 40 blocks in the city’s Central Business District. Spreading more than 5 miles, thousands of pedestrians use it each day as a safe and fast way to move around the city. Due to its sheltered design, you can stay dry and still walk around Chicago, exploring the city even in the rain.

The Pedway has been growing since the city began construction in 1951 to connect Blue Line and Red Line subways only a block away from each other. Since that first bit was built, the Pedway has grown to join over 50 buildings. It’s a defining part of the city and helps reduce any accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.

If you’d like to have a guided experience through the Pedway, several companies offer tours. Tours by Foot offers a guided walk through the Pedway to see Chicago’s famous architecture and buildings like City Hall, the Wrigley Building, the Thompson Center and the Marina Towers. In addition to seeing stunning architecture, you’ll find some of the best-hidden restaurants in the city and see some beautiful art. Best part? The tour is free.

Winter Views Of Chicago

What to do in Chicago in the winter?

The 360 and the SkyDeck are the two main places to visit to enjoy a view of the Chicago Skyline in all its winter glory.

One of the insider tricks though, is to go up the Hancock Building at 875 Michigan Avenue. Go up to the 96th floor and youll reach the Signature Lounge, free to enter but pricey drinks, and enjoy a view out to Chicago. I tried to do this but the queue was too long for the time I had. Make sure to leave plenty of time.
