Better Than Staring Out The Windshield
When Congress created Amtrak in 1970 after the demise of for-profit passenger railroads, the nations rail infrastructure already was aging. Decades of underinvestment and neglect have created a system that is at capacity and falls short of modern railroad standards.
Amtrak and the federal government in recent years have identified dozens of projects that would rebuild and expand tunnels, bridges and tracks that are near or at the end of their useful lives.
Bidens infrastructure plan, which includes $80 billion for rail over five years mostly benefiting Amtrak would address the passenger rails repair backlog, modernize the Northeast Corridor and extend service to more cities, all in line with Amtraks vision. Two-thirds of the new funding would support existing routes, including in the Northeast, according to the White House. The rest would support new or improved intercity and freight operations.
Republicans in the Senate offered their own infrastructure bill that includes $20 billion for rail. House Democrats followed with a transportation funding bill that , including a tripling of funding to Amtrak.
Amtrak and its supporters are cheering the presidents plan, but Bidens proposal still would fall short of the money Amtrak needs for repairs and expansion. The company estimates it has a backlog of $60.2 billion in projects, with about $45 billion of that in the Northeast Corridor.

Report: Georgia Couple Killed In Montana Amtrak Train Derailment
Cars from an Amtrak train that derailed the day before are shown illuminated by floodlights, late Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, as they rest near a train signal near Joplin, Mont. The westbound Empire Builder was en route to Seattle from Chicago with two locomotives and 10 cars.
ATLANTA We now know that two of three people who were killed in an Amtrak train derailment in Montana over the weekend were from Georgia.
According to a report from The Brunswick News, Don and Margie Varnadoe, of Gylnn County, were aboard the Empire Builder when it derailed in north central Montana on Saturday.
The westbound Empire Builder was traveling from Chicago to Seattle when it left the tracks about 4 p.m. Saturday near Joplin, a town of about 200. Amtrak spokesman Jason Abrams said the train was carrying about 141 passengers and 16 crew members. It had two locomotives and 10 cars, eight of which derailed, with some tipping onto their sides.
Three people were killed, including the couple from St. Simons, Ga. Seven others were injured.
Cities Accessible Via Connecting Services
In some cases, it is technically feasible to travel between two cities by train, but the journey time is wildly disproportionate to the distance separating them. This is especially true of cities within a few hundred miles by road which happen not to be on the same passenger rail line.
Because of the infrequency of most Amtrak services, any journey that requires a transfer is usually excessively long due to the wait times between trains on different routes. Amtrak also offers very few routes, which can necessitate extreme detours via distant cities, again adding significantly to the total travel time.
Unless you want to make a stopover in a transfer city, a bus service or flight will usually be much faster and will not necessarily cost more.
Savannah, GA Although there used to be a direct passenger rail service between Savannah and Atlanta, it was discontinued in the 1970s. There is talk of resurrecting the line, but for now train travel between the cities takes more than 24 hours .
If time and money are no object and you would like to spend the day in Washington, DC, an overnight train to that city is available from Atlanta, leaving a full day in the capital before taking another overnight train to Savannah .
Baggage storage facilities are available at Washingtons Union Station, as are sleeper cars with shared shower facilities on both routes.
Jacksonville, FL Jacksonville is two hours further down the east coast mainline route from Savannah.
