The Attendants On The Train Were So Helpful And Kind

I think Amtrak attendants – from the dining-car staff to the assistants at Red Cap, a service for those who need extra help – are some of the nicest people in the travel industry.

They’re helpful and friendly. They also work hard to make sure that the train is safe for everyone, especially when it comes to ensuring people wear masks.

I make sure to show the attendants how much I appreciate them by tipping and I encourage other riders to do the same if they can.

I Was Surprised To Find A Small Bathroom In The Room

Next to one of the seats was a toilet and above that was a fold-down sink and mirror. I was even supplied with soap and clean towels.

I was pleasantly surprised I didn’t have to go down the hall to use one of the shared bathrooms because Amtrak bathrooms aren’t the cleanest. Despite the convenience of the bathroom, I realized the space is best for solo travelers like myself because otherwise I’d be doing my business right next to my traveling buddy.

Superliner Sightseer Lounge Car

after spending a good chunk of my afternoon in club acela ...

On the upper deck is an observation lounge with armchairs & tables and huge windows for sightseeing. On the lower deck is a cafe selling drinks & snacks. All passengers can use the lounge car, whether they are travelling in coach class or in the sleepers. You end up spending most of your day here, watching America unfold in front of you! Seats are available on a first-come, first served basis, but it’s not usually too difficult to find a seat or two free. However, they do fill up for the most scenic sections of the journey! Where Youll Shower

The bathroom where we changed into our pajamas is also where we showered. Amtrak provides fresh towels and soap you bring your favorite toiletries, hairdryer, and flip-flops. The shower was small, but clean. Word to the wise: There are grip bars. Use them! The train will make starts and stops. You dont want to go flying while freshening up.

While there was one shower for all 12 roomettes, we didnt once have to wait to access it.

Is It Worth It

A few things to keep in mind:

Tickets for sleeping accommodations are not cheap. We paid $400 for our roomette, which barely accommodated two people. This is not the Ritz. Accommodations are fine, but consider this a glamping-type situation instead of a luxe experience.

The train is often late. Amtrak shares the rails, and must wait on the tracks while freight trains pass. If you have to make a connection or are in a rush, do not take the train!

Theres no in-room entertainment, and Wi-Fi on the train is spotty. Plan to bring books, download podcasts in advance, and perhaps pack a deck of cards.

That said, the best show is right outside your window, as you relax, unwind, and see America in a way that few of us have the time to anymore. We loved the experience of riding the rails.

I Thought The Hot Food Options In Coach Were Lacking

I like the food on Amtrak’s traditional dining menu. Almost every time I ride, I get a lobster and crab cake, a medium-rare steak with wine sauce, a nice carrot cake, and a glass of red wine.

Unfortunately, the traditional dining menu is usually only available on Western train lines like the California Zephyr, Empire Builder, or Sunset Limited. I was taking the Capitol Limited, which has a flexible-dining menu.

I usually don’t like the flexible-dining menu, but it didn’t matter since I was a coach passenger. In coach, my options for hot meals were slim and limited to things on the café menu, like hot dogs or a cup of noodles.

I felt bad for a woman who begged the attendant to give her a more substantial hot meal because she’d been traveling in coach for three days and hadn’t had food besides ramen that whole time.

The attendant was super nice and promised to help her figure something out, but it was still kind of a bummer that coach passengers don’t have access to bigger meals no matter how long they’ve been on the train.

The Grand Canyon Connection

There are two main ways to reach the Grand Canyon as part of a cross-country train trip, after you get off Amtrak’s Chief at Flagstaff Arizona. The first is to use a bus between Flagstaff and the South Rim of the Canyon, journey time 1 hour 45 minutes each way. The other is to take a connecting Amtrak Thruway bus to the nearby town of Williams and use the historic Grand Canyon Railway to the Canyon, journey time 2 hours Williams to the South Rim.

Advice For Taking The Train From Washington To Chicago

This isn’t really seeking advice but hopefully giving some helpful tips. I just took Amtrak from DC to Chicago. The train leaves Union Station in the evening and puts you in Chicago in the AM. The best part is you are in the heart of Chicago. No lugging through an airport. For the train trip I recommend bringing a small cooler loaded w/ food & drink. Much easier and better than waiting in line at the car cafe. You can eat in the dining car or lounge. The seats in coach class are much larger than an airplane and can recline w/ a foot rest but the problem was the temperature. The train was FREEZING! Even if it is 90 degrees outside, pack a blanket, socks and jacket for the train ride. Have fun.

I’m on the California Zephyr right now and our car is also too cold. I always wear a long sleeve shirt on the train. Believe me, it’s better to be too cold than not have the AC working in steel boxes. It’s good to hear nice things about the train. I like the Capitol Limited between Chicago and Washington DC because of the Superliner equipment.

it is very cold on the train so yes bring a blanket…because amtrak does not provide any blankets…you can buy them on the train I think or I got off in Montana and bought one at Glacier National Park gift shop.
