Amtrak To Restore Full Milwaukee
In April of 2020, Amtrak suspended the Hiawatha Service, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and resumed the service in early June, but with fewer daily round-trips.
Ridership on the Hiawatha Service was 882,000 in the 2019 fiscal year , up 4.5% from fiscal 2018, but fell 53.9% in 2020, during the pandemic, to 403,112.
The Hiawatha is the most-traveled Midwest line for Amtrak. The regular weekday schedule of seven round-trips is now available for booking, with an additional Chicago departure on Friday nights the Saturday schedule of seven departures from Milwaukee and six from Chicago and the Sunday schedule of six round-trips, Amtrak said.
In addition, service is being restored for two daily round-trip Amtrak Thruway Buses between Green Bay and Milwaukee, with stops in De Pere, Appleton, Oshkosh and Fond du Lac.
Reservations will be required, Amtrak said, which is done automatically during purchases of one-way or round-trip tickets online or at ticketing kiosks at train stations. Customers are encouraged to use the capacity indicator at the time of booking, showing each trains seating availability, Amtrak said.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is teaming up with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to get the public’s input on the proposed intercity passenger rail service improvements for the Twin Cities-Milwaukee-Chicago corridor.
The recorded presentation is on the WisDOT website and has information on the anticipated project schedule, service improvements, and proposed railroad work.
WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said, the importance of intercity connectivity and travel options cannot be overlooked when considering regional transportation.
Thompson hopes to provide more transportation options for the expanding population of young professionals will grow the local economy. He continued by saying, this project leverages the existing rail corridor and passenger rail service to significantly improve the value of this transportation option across the state. This not only serves major Midwestern cities, but many rural communities along the route.
The project will maintain and expand upon the current 411-mile rail corridor by adding a second, daily round trip along the route.
The primary benefit of this is to provide residents of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois convenient access to jobs, cultural attractions, top universities, and world-class healthcare.

MILWAUKEE — Amtrak Midwest is restoring all Hiawatha Service round-trips between Milwaukee and Chicago beginning Sunday, May 23, and the twice daily round-trip Amtrak Thruway Buses between Green Bay and Milwaukee, with stops in De Pere, Appleton, Oshkosh and Fond du Lac.
According to a news release, the full Hiawatha Service train schedule will resume with seven round trips Monday through Saturday, and six on Sunday. On Fridays, a late-night departure from Chicago to Milwaukee will again be available.
The Amtrak Thruway buses along Interstate 41 connect Green Bay, Appleton, Oshkosh, and Fond du Lac to Amtrak Hiawatha trains in Milwaukee for travel to Chicago and beyond. Together with the Lamers Bus Lines service along the same route, train connections are available daily for three round-trip buses. The entire trip can be purchased through Amtrak, and a single ticket covers both the bus and the train.
