On December 10th, United flight 898 spent just under 14 hours in the air from Chicagos OHare International Airport to New Delhis Indira Gandhi International Airport . In a year of relative pain for the airline, this flight marked the start of what United hopes is a turning point as the carrier moves beyond the crisis towards profitability.

Arrival Of Passenger Service And Subsequent Growth

Scheduled passenger service began in 1955, but growth was slow at first. Although Chicago had invested over $25 million in O’Hare, Midway remained the world’s busiest airport and airlines were reluctant to move until highway access and other improvements were completed. The April 1957 Official Airline Guide listed 36 weekday departures from the airport, while Midway coped with 414. Improvements began to attract the airlines: O’Hare’s first dedicated international terminal opened in August 1958, and by April 1959 the airport had expanded to 7,200 acres with new hangars, terminals, parking and other facilities. The expressway link to downtown Chicago, now known as the Kennedy Expressway, was completed in 1960. And new Terminals 2 and 3, designed by C. F. Murphy and Associates, opened on January 1, 1962.

United Is Not The Only Airline Cutting Small City Routes
United is not the only airline pulling flights from smaller communities. According to The Points Guy, at this same time in 2020, American Airlines suspended its service to three small cities in the NortheastâNewburgh, New York New Haven, Connecticut and Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The airline told the news outlet that its flights to these cities were “not financially viable routes for the foreseeable cities.”
Delta Air Lines also recently dropped its route from Salt Lake City, Utah, to Durango, Colorado, on Nov. 1, just six months after relaunching it, as reported by the Durango Herald. SkyWest, a regional carrier who operated Delta’s flights between these cities told the news outlet that, similar to United’s cuts, demand was a major factor in this decision.
“We appreciate the support we have seen from the community however, there is not enough sustainable demand to continue offering these flights,” a spokesperson for SkyWest told the Durango Herald.

United Airlines Pulling Daily Flights From Evv To Chicago

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Officials at the Evansville Regional Airport announced on Facebook that United Airlines is pulling their daily flights from EVV to Chicago effective January 4, 2022.
According to the social media post, United officials said this is because of limited resources and staffing across the airline system.
Officials say EVV is one of about 15 airports that are affected by Uniteds exit announcements.
Evansville Regional Airport says they will keep in touch with the airline about future opportunities.
They say American Airlines will continue to serve Chicago to EVV and has even added additional capacity in November.
Many passengers flying to and from Chicago today say they choose to fly United for its efficiency.
This will be my second trip this year and I know were scheduled for another trip in December, Jacqueline Johnson said, who is in town for a business conference. Trying to find flights that are about six, seven hours and still making that stop in Chicago, it can be a long day. So having that convenience on United coming though here – it helps.
Its really convenient, its a lot faster, Frances Loftin said, who says she flies to Evansville often to visit childhood friends and family. Instead of a seven hour flight, you have a four hour flight or a three and a half hour flight. It makes a world of difference.

The First Of Uniteds Major Long
In September, United Airlines announced seven new nonstop long-haul routes, including five international ones. The six other upcoming routes are:
Most of the other routes will start from spring 2021. This includes Uniteds route to Bangalore, which will be the longest in the airlines network and link the two big tech cities.
United Airlines announced these new routes as it took advantage of the situation. Amid the ongoing crisis, South African Airways flights between Africa and the United States were suspended. And, given the airlines current state of affairs, United will have these routes all to itself.
On flights to India, United has a better reputation than Air India. It will definitely hold its own given its strength and ability to provide smoother domestic connections. United also has an agreement with Vistara for codeshares in India.
The new Chicago to Delhi route is part of United tapping into demand for flights to India while some of its competitors, including Delta, remain out of the market.

What are business class fares and award pricing like for these United routes? Obviously this is subject to change, but if paying cash, business class fares start at ~$1,980 roundtrip from Chicago to Kona, and ~$2,195 roundtrip from Newark to Maui.
Ultimately Id say thats very reasonable entry level pricing, when you consider that these are longer than many transatlantic business class flights.
