COVID-19 and civil unrest changed the paradigm for everyone in 2020. For some, our eyes are just now being opened to the systemic racism that exists. But many Black and Brown Chicagoans have long known that deep-seated inequalities have created wealth, education and health gaps because they experience the effects daily. These issues disproportionately impact communities of color, leaving many families unable to access housing, childcare, food, transportation, healthcare and employment opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified these inequities. The Chicago region has done an outstanding job responding to immediate relief efforts, and now we must continue to provide that safety net while simultaneously turning our attention to addressing systematic racism as a way of sustaining longer-term recovery and rebuilding.

About United Way of Metro Chicago
The vision of United Way of Metro Chicago is to create a stronger, more equitable Chicago region where all residents have access to the resources they need to thrive. The goal is to ensure all individuals and families can meet their basic needs and work alongside neighborhoods to reverse the effects of decades of systemic racism and disinvestment to improve health, education, and financial outcomes.
United Way does this through Partnerships, Neighborhood Networks, Regional Recovery and the United Neighborhoods Equity Fund. United Way Metro Chicago brings together businesses, government, nonprofits, and agency and community leaders to deliver funding, resources, and expertise to nonprofit organizations across greater Chicago. Reporting to the President and CEO, the new Vice President, Initiatives and Public Programming will serve as a key thought partner for the senior team. They will collaborate on strategies that amplify impact and build greater public awareness of the work needed to create a stronger, more equitable Chicago region.

Fundraising: The Crusade Of Mercy
The Community Fund’s increased interaction with Chicago’s business community led to the inception of what is today called the Loaned Executive Program . Begun in the mid-1950s, this program nominally borrowed executives, from companies like ComEd, Northern Trust, and LaSalle Bank, to fundraise for the Community Fund. Simultaneously, many large corporations began internal fundraising initiatives. These would encourage employees to sign up for automatic donations that is, a preset amount of money would be deducted from participant’s paychecks and donated to the Community Fund.
These fundraising initiatives were furthered in 1957, when the Community Fund partnered with the Mid-America Chapter of the American Red Cross, forming the Community Fund-Red Cross Joint Appeal. This organization, run by but independent of the Community Fund and the Red Cross, consolidated both organizations’ fundraising efforts. In 1959, the organization changed its name to the Crusade of Mercy, and became the Metropolitan Crusade of Mercy in 1964 . Now incorporating suburban Chicago as well as the city proper, the Metropolitan Crusade of Mercy actively campaigned for funds annually, in addition to maintaining Community Chest’s corporate employee fundraising program.

United Neighborhoods Equity Fund
United Way of Metro Chicago, with the support of founding sponsor Peoples Gas, launched the United Neighborhoods Equity Fund to support small, Black and brown-led nonprofits predominantly located in the citys south and west sides and south suburban region, and connect them to new capacity building and investment opportunities.

Where We Do It
The City of Chicago is made up of 77 diverse and dynamic neighborhoods. Currently, 2.7 million people call the city home, but not everyone has access to the wealth of resources that Chicago has to offernearly 22% of the population lives below the poverty line. United Way is working with partner agencies and community stakeholders at the neighborhood level to bring about city-wide change.
The North-Northwest Suburban Region is known for its areas of prosperity. Yet, as this region becomes more diverse, economic disparity between communities of color and white communities has become more apparent. United Way and our local partners are working to increase equity in the areas of health, education, financial stability and safety.
The Southlands, as it is commonly known, is home to 20% of Cook Countys suburban population. Parts of the region lack access to basic needs such as food, housing and safety from abuse. In partnership with 34 area agencies, United Way is has been able to connect more than 95,000 people with the services and resources they need.
