The $633 Million Cancer Hospital Would Be The First Free

Cancer Research Breakthroughs with UChicago Medicines Funmi Olopade

Dr. Adekunle Odunsi, director of UChicago Medicines Comprehensive Cancer Center, overlooks the site where the new cancer center will be built.

The University of Chicago Medical Center has revealed plans for a new $633 million cancer center on its South Side campus.

UChicago Medicine filed a certificate of need request this week to the Illinois Health Facilities & Service Review Board seeking approval to move forward with the proposed site. If approved, the 500,000-square-foot center will be located on East 57th Street between South Maryland and South Drexel avenues on land owned by UChicago Medicine. The site is currently a parking lot.

The new facility, which would be the first free-standing cancer center in Chicago, would span seven floors and have nearly 130 patient beds. It would provide both inpatient and outpatient care for patients with all types of cancer. The center will offer chemotherapy treatments, diagnostic services, X-rays, infusions and more, said Dr. Adekunle Odunsi, the director of UChicago Medicines Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in Illinois.

The unique opportunity that we have right now is to reimagine cancer care of the future with this new hospital, Odunsi said. This is going to be a patient-centric facility.

  • pioneering new imaging techniques that are helping specialists diagnose cancer earlier
  • maximizing the impact of immunotherapy by identifying the determinants of antitumor immunity, host factors that contribute to response, and potent combination therapies to improve efficacy and durability of treatment
  • leading national efforts in cancer bioinformatics and cloud computing to get an in-depth view of cancer genomics, epigenetics, proteomics and gene expression
  • unraveling the molecular and genetic basis of cancer metastasis in order to develop successful treatments that will prevent cancer from spreading
  • understanding the underlying causes of cancer health disparities and designing evidence-based interventions to promote cancer health equity

$633m Facility To Be A Global Destination For Cancer Care Located On Chicagos South Side

The University of Chicago Medicine plans to build a $633 million, 500,000-square-foot facility dedicated to cancer care on its medical campus on the citys South Side, representing one of the largest investments made by the academic health system for patients and the community.

The plan for Chicagos first freestanding clinical cancer center includes the addition of 128 beds. These beds will be dedicated to patients with cancer, allowing UChicago Medicine to open other beds for patients with complex or acute care needs in areas such as organ transplants, digestive diseases, cardiology, orthopedics and trauma care. This, in turn, will help address some of the capacity constraints for the medical center, whose beds are full most days of the year.

As a critical first step, UChicago Medicine this week filed a Certificate of Need request to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board seeking approval to spend money on design and site planning for the proposed cancer center. This preparatory work is foundational to detailed planning for the cancer center and will inform its subsequent CON request this fall for construction of the building. A significant amount of work is being planned around the patient experience and care-journey mapping, for which the participation of the community and current and former patients will be integral.

Mesothelioma Clinical Trails At The Uchicago Medicine

The cancer center plays a large role in exploring new approaches to mesothelioma treatment through clinical trials. Clinical trials at the treatment center are performed in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute and drug manufacturers. They are important because they help researchers learn more about how to treat the disease and improve patient care.

Researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine have a particular interest in genetics and immunotherapies. Primary research facilities like UChicago Medicine offer a variety of clinical trials and are always looking for new participants. As of July 2022, there are 8 clinical trials currently recruiting mesothelioma patients.

  • Anti-PD-1 Antibody Pembrolizumab in Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma Patients This study is a single institution, single-arm, window of opportunity pilot trial of pembrolizumab in patients with resectable malignant pleural mesothelioma.
  • Targeted Radiation Therapy to Surgery and Pemetrexed and Cisplatin for state I-IIIA This trial studies how well the addition of targeted radiation therapy to surgery and the usual chemotherapy treatment of Pemetrexed and Cisplatin works for the treatment of stage I-IIIA malignant pleural mesothelioma.
  • Olaparib in Patients With HRD Malignant Mesothelioma University of Chicago Medicine In this study, researchers will give olaparib to mesothelioma patients who have specific changes in their DNA .
  • Treating Pleural And Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Most cancer centers have teams within their lung treatment departments that are dedicated to treating pleural mesothelioma but lack the specialization to treat cases of mesothelioma arising in the peritoneal cavity.

A dedicated mesothelioma program and treatment technologies have enabled the UCCC to rise as a leader in the treatment of both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma.

The University of Chicago Medicine is planning a $633 million freestanding clinical cancer center, which will be the city’s first and will span 500,000 square feet on its campus on the South Side.

UChicago filed a certificate of need request to the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board, according to a Feb. 3 news release shared with Becker’s.

The new facility will add 128 beds, which will be dedicated to patients with cancer and free other beds for patients with complex and acute care needs. Additionally, it will ease capacity issues the medical center has been experiencing, according to the release.

The cancer center will also address healthcare inequities for residents of the city’s South Side, who have a higher cancer burden and less access to care, according to the release.

“Cancer death rates on the South Side are almost twice the national average, and cancer is the second-leading cause of death for area residents,” said Kunle Odunsi, MD, PhD, director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This is one of the key reasons we are building this cancer center. Social determinants of health are not only linked to adverse environmental exposures but also to a lack of resources, including access to disease prevention, early detection and high-quality cancer care.”

If approved, the center will break ground in 2023 and open in 2026. At least 41 percent of contract money for construction will support minority- and woman-owned firms.
