Fourth Annual Pearson Global Forum Will Convene Experts Oct 12
The University of Chicago will gather global policymakers alongside leading scholars and experts Oct. 12-14 at the 2021 Pearson Global Forum, a virtual event that will examine the consequences of misinformation in the digital age.
Hosted by the Harris School of Public Policys Pearson Institute for the Study and Resolution of Global Conflicts, the fourth annual Pearson Global Forum is entitled Information in Conflict, and will explore how misinformation has flourished and its troubling implications for worsening conflict throughout the world.
There is growing concern about the devastating toll that misinformation and disinformation pose to our global health, security and future, said Prof. James A. Robinson, director of the Pearson Institute and a leading scholar of political and economic institutions. By gathering such a world-class field of scholars and experts, the Pearson Global Forum hopes to increase our collective understanding of these and related issues, exchange ideas, and maximize the potential for advancing progress in preventing and resolving violent conflicts and informing policy.
The 2021 Pearson Global Forum will be free to the public registration is required. Robinson will speak each day, including welcome and closing remarks for the three-day event. Other UChicago faculty speakers include Profs. David Awschalom, Chris Blattman and Konstantin Sonin. The full conference agenda is available here.
Great Schools That Don’t Require Sat Or Act Scores
- The SAT and ACT are two of the most common metrics schools use to determine who they allow in.
- But many students suffer from crippling test anxiety, which can impact scores and lower their chances of attending their college of choice.
- Recent studies suggest that standardized tests disproportionately favor white and wealthy students.
- Here are 30 universities that don’t require SAT or ACT scores.
- Visit INSIDER’s homepage for more stories.
For many prospective college students, taking the SATs and ACTs is a nerve-wracking, anxiety-producing experience. While the SAT can certainly help some students by potentially acting as a type of equalizer for those with lower high school grades, a growing bodyof research shows that placing so much weight in these types of exams can cause crippling anxiety.
In 2018, Jennifer Heissel, an associate professor at the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy at the Naval Postgraduate School, studied stress levels from a group of New Orleans elementary school students before and after they took a standardized test. The findings did not bode well for the exams. The test increased the children’s cortisol levels, which in turn led to poor results.
“We found that the kids who had large responses in changes in their cortisol performed worse on high-stakes test,” Heissel told INSIDER.

Engaging A Diverse Future Workforce

Fostering diversity in the quantum workforce is another challenge, Zhong said, so the TeachQuantum pilot focused on teachers from South Side schools that serve mostly students of color in Kenwood, Woodlawn, Hyde Park, Englewood and South Chicago. Davenports students at Bowen are 79% Black and 20% Latinx 86% of them live in low-income households.
The TeachQuantum initiative exemplifies the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineerings commitment to educating the next generation of quantum engineers, said Matthew Tirrell, dean of PME. Through this program, we aim to increase interest in and exposure to not only quantum, but also STEM fields more broadly, and to introduce and welcome those traditionally underrepresented in the sciences to new and exciting educational and career opportunities.
Davenport plans to test his cryptography game with thirty-five students in the second semester of this school year hes getting other Bowen departments into the act as well, encouraging the social studies team to teach World War II cryptography to deepen students understanding of the concept. And he and Zhong both envision TeachQuantum scaling up to develop a large set of learning modules that align with the Next Generation Science Standards, which have been adapted or adopted by 44 states, including Illinois.
According to Zhong, learning flowed in both directions during the TeachQuantum pilot. I learned as much as the teachers did, he said.

Bequest To Support Undergraduate Aid Research And International Education And Collaborations
The University of Chicago has received a $50 million gift from the late Arley D. Cathey, PhB50, a devoted alumnus and patron of the University. The bequest, the largest estate gift in University history, was directed to UChicago when Cathey died in 2020 at the age of 93. It will support UChicagos commitments to educational access and financial aid, enhanced opportunities for undergraduate research, and new international educational programs for College students and research collaborations sponsored by UChicago faculty abroad.
In honor of the gift, the College is launching a $20 million match campaign, called the Arley D. Cathey Odyssey Challenge, to support the Odyssey Scholarship Program. More than 5,300 students have accessed UChicago through Odyssey, the Universitys flagship financial aid initiative, which helps ensure need-blind, loan-free education for students. The challenge will help continue the mentorship, study abroad and paid internships made possible through the program, along with the elimination of loans and academic-year work requirements.
The University of Chicago is deeply grateful to Arley for his generous support of undergraduate education, said President Paul Alivisatos. His bequest emphasizes the importance of UChicagos transformative education and the Universitys unwavering commitment to ensuring access for talented students worldwide.

Closing The Quantum Gap
Quantum encryption, computing, and sensing are expected to have a broad impact on industry and the economy, potentially enabling everything from unhackable digital communications to more powerful, energy-efficient electronic devices to new ways of diagnosing and treating disease.
But while theres a rapidly growing need for quantum-trained researchers and workers, the field is young and not yet part of most students pre-college learning.
Were making exponential progress toward real-world applications of the technology, but we have a huge gap in training students who will become the workforce for this industry, said Tian Zhong, a quantum researcher and assistant professor at PME.
When high school students master the quantum basics that Davenport and Zhong both call counterintuitive, theyll have an easier time with related material later. Companies are realizing that they dont have people in these fields because quantum isnt part of schools curriculumstudents may encounter bits and pieces in grad school, but thats too late, Zhong said.
Theres a huge gap in our education pipeline, and given how fast the field is moving, we have to start solving it now.
The TeachQuantum pilot launched in June of 2021. Working in Zhongs lab and brainstorming with the other members of the cohort, Davenport built an engaging game that shows students how quantum encryption can transmit messages securely without danger of being hacked.
