Estate Of El Dorado Butane Company Owner Gives $50 Million To University Of Chicago
A bequest from the late Arley D. Cathey, PhB50, who died in 2020 at age 93, will support the University of Chicagos commitments to educational access and aid, as well as many other opportunities for research and collaboration.
The University of Chicago has received a $50 million gift from the late Arley D. Cathey of El Dorado , a devoted alumnus and patron of the university.
The bequest, the largest estate gift in university history, was directed to UChicago when Cathey died in 2020 at the age of 93.
It will support UChicagos commitments to educational access and financial aid, enhanced opportunities for undergraduate research, and new international educational programs for college students and research collaborations sponsored by UChicago faculty abroad.
In honor of the gift, the college is launching a $20 million match campaign, called the Arley D. Cathey Odyssey Challenge, to support the Odyssey Scholarship Program. More than 5,300 students have accessed UChicago through Odyssey, the universitys flagship financial aid initiative, which helps ensure need-blind, loan-free education for students. The challenge will help continue the mentorship, study abroad and paid internships made possible through the program, along with the elimination of loans and academic-year work requirements.
Cathey enrolled in the college at age 16. He often remarked that reading texts such as the Iliad and the Odyssey as part of the Core curriculum was a transformative experience.

The biggest advantage of this program is its caliber in teaching. The depth and style of teaching was perfect, keeping a perfect balance of serious work and an exciting atmosphere. Despite having to read tons and writing an essay, I was still eager to jump out of bed and dash into class.”Lawrence X., Western Academy of Beijing, Beijing, China
Why Summer Programs Benefit High Schoolers
Summer programs for high school students are about more than just having fun . One of the main benefits of summer programs is that they allow students to specialize in an area of interest. These programs often give students an inside look into an industry or academic discipline that they wouldnt be able to get in a traditional class setting, and expand students awareness of opportunities in that field.
Many summer programs are held at colleges and universities, which provides an additional bonus of helping students get a feel for what its like to live on a college campus. These programs can often inform students of hard-to-find resources, such as specialized learning communities or even scholarships. Not only that, but being on a college campus can inspire students about attending college in general, since they experience the combination of fun social activities with stimulating intellectual endeavors firsthand.
College admissions officers care about students extracurricular activities and often consider them not only as part of the admissions process, but also when awarding merit scholarships. They want to see that students pursued their interests outside of the classroom and took advantage of the resources available to them. Summer programs are often more interesting to admissions counselors because fewer students participate in them, and these experiences can be valuable material for a memorable admission essay.

Submitting Letters Of Recommendation
All school counselors and teachers have the option of submitting letters of recommendation and school forms online via the Coalition Application or Common Application. They should follow the instructions on the relevant application for submitting these forms. Teachers and counselors may print out and submit these forms on paper even if you submit your application online. Letters of recommendation must come directly from the recommender and should not be sent by the applicant. Letters of recommendation can be added to your application after the application deadline, so you do not need to ask your recommender to submit their letter before or at the same time as you have submitted your application.
If your recommenders are most comfortable writing in a language other than English, they may. Have them submit the original letter accompanied by a translation.
