Until the middle of the twentieth century, Hyde Park remained an almost exclusively neighborhood . Hyde Parkers relied on to keep out of the neighborhood. At the time, the use of such covenants was supported by the University of Chicago.
After the banned racially restrictive covenants in 1948, African Americans began moving into Hyde Park, and the neighborhood gradually became multiracial. These levels may range from Level I to Level IV. Some hospitals are less-formally designated Level V.
The ACS does not officially designate hospitals as trauma centers. Numerous U.S. hospitals that are not verified by ACS claim trauma center designation. Most states have legislation that determines the process for designation of trauma centers within that state. The ACS describes this responsibility as “a geopolitical process by which empowered entities, government or otherwise, are authorized to designate.” The ACS’s self-appointed mission is limited to confirming and reporting on any given hospital’s ability to comply with the ACS standard of care known as Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient.

Can I Receive Care If I’ve Recently Returned From A State Covered By The City’s Travel Order
Patients in need of medical care can continue to travel to UChicago Medicine from states on the city’s City of Chicago’s emergency travel order quarantine list. However, patients from the city’s list of high-risk states may have additional visitor limitations for portions of their hospitalizations.
In our outpatient clinics, patients returning from travel to high-risk states and international travel will continue to receive care in scheduled clinical areas provided they wear masks as required and follow our current policies. All patients will be screened at building entrances and those with COVID-19 symptoms will be referred to our Care Transitions Clinic.

Hospital Closures Have Ripple Effects
Other Chicago hospitals may also be dealing with fallout from the changes at Mercy though not as dramatically as U. of I. Hospital.
Rush got 478 ambulances in July, compared with 371 ambulances in August 2020, according to city data.
The City of Chicagos Office of Emergency Management and Communications did not respond to requests for data showing how many ambulances Stroger has received.
But Stroger is now getting about as many ambulances as it did before the pandemic, said Cook County Health spokeswoman Alexandra Normington, in an email. University of Chicago Medical Center, which is about 4.5 miles south of Insight, has also been seeing an increase in demand.
Its difficult to know whether the ambulance traffic at those hospitals is because of Mercy, the pandemic or other factors, leaders of those institutions say.
But the loss or closure of a single organization or even cuts to services at a hospital can further strain the regions already overburdened health system, said Tom Jackiewicz, U. of C. Medical Center president, in a statement.
Every time a hospital closes or reduces services, it creates a ripple effect on other hospitals and Mercy wont likely be the last Chicago hospital to threaten to close its doors or scale back services, hospital and community leaders say.

Uchicago Medicines Trauma Center Increases South Side Care Access Study Shows

University of Chicago Medical Centers Level 1 trauma center has had a promising impact on reducing racial disparities in access to trauma care, according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study compared ambulance run timesthe time from injury scene departure to hospital arrivalfrom the year before and after the trauma centers opening in 2018 across the city. The results showed that the greatest decrease in ambulance run times occurred in black and low-income zip codes near the center, suggesting that racial disparities in trauma care access can be reduced by opening trauma centers in underserved areas.
Ali Abbasi, the lead researcher and a recent graduate from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine , said that it is no accident of history that the black and low-income communities on the South Side have had poorer access to trauma care than the white and more advantaged communities of the city.
The positive results of the study exceeded the researchers expectations, giving them ambitious hopes for the impact of UCMCs trauma center. Reduction in times for black neighborhoods near the trauma center were so significant that they actually drove a citywide reduction, Okum said.
