Uchicago Medicine To Acquire Controlling Stake In 4 Adventhealth Hospitals

University of Chicago Medicine and AdventHealth have inked a definitive agreement to enter into an affiliation.

Under the agreement, UChicago Medicine will acquire a controlling interest in AdventHealth’s Great Lakes Region, which includes four Illinois hospitals, and AdventHealth will retain the remaining interest and manage daily operations of the facilities.

“Joining UChicago Medicine will allow us to further our mission and enhance our ability to deliver high-quality, whole-person care to more people in the communities served in the greater Chicago area,” AdventHealth President and CEO Terry Shaw said in a Sept. 13 news release.

The proposed transaction requires regulatory approvals. Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth and UChicago Medicine said the transaction is expected to close at the end of this year or in early 2023.

The four Illinois hospitals that make up AdventHealth’s Great Lakes Region are in Bolingbrook, Glendale Heights, Hinsdale and LaGrange.

“We are excited to be in a position to offer enhanced services to patients who live in the western suburbs by bringing UChicago Medicine’s clinical innovations and highly specialized care to the Great Lakes Region hospitals while maintaining AdventHealth’s historical commitment to convenient access to high-quality, community-based care,” Tom Jackiewicz, president of the University of Chicago Medical Center and COO of UChicago Medicine, said in the news release.

Uchicago Nurses Say Conditions Amid Surging Caseloads Are ‘at A Breaking Point’

University of Chicago Medical Center nurse Marie LaFondant speaks at a National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United protest at Stroger Hospital, 1901 W. Harrison St., Jan. 13

Unionized nurses at the University of Chicago Medical Center say insufficient staffing is endangering patient health and pushing many of their colleagues away from their jobs. The union, National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United , is urging the state legislature to pass a bill that would legally mandate patient-to-staff ratios in Illinois.

“University of Chicago hospitals are at a breaking point, both in Hyde Park and at Ingalls Memorial in Harvey,” said Marie LaFontant, a 37-year nurse who has worked in intensive care units for more than two decades. “The number of COVID patients in both locations are higher than at any point in the pandemic, almost double last year’s inpatient numbers.”

Nurses and other health care workers like doctors and support staff, she said, are getting infected at the highest rates since the pandemic began. She said nurses are exhausted from working with insufficient staff and burned out from long shifts and increased demand to do overtime.

LaFontant said the hospital industry created this crisis from having worked “at a minimum” when the pandemic began.

Scott Mechanic, an emergency room nurse at UCMC, said conditions there are untenable.

This story has been updated to include a statement from Tom Jackiewicz.

They may also reveal information or provide tips on interviewing skill requirements, and other factors that could help when applying for a position at that company. Reviews may also highlight any negative aspects of a company that will help in evaluating it as a prospective employer.

I had a good impression of UofC prior to working there, and wow was a way off base. The unit culture was really negative and a lot of blame was put on the nurse just trying to make the best of a very tough situation

Company has really good benefits. However, retirement matching doesnt happen until youve reached two years. Also, dont really do much to appreciate employees.

This company is terrible. Management is poor. Recruiters and Directors are deceptive. They charged me for insurance benefits and then cut them off. They dint want to pay me back the benefits they charged me for that i could not use. Ridiculous. Be careful before signing with this company. They dont care about their employees.

The pay is a big plus. Benefits are good and they give a good amount of vacation time that you can acrue. Management is nice and the employees on the floor are very friendly!
