University Of Illinois Tuition Hike Delayed Because Of Covid

The University of Illinois will increase housing costs for some undergraduates and raise student fees next fall despite concerns about the ballooning cost of college, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The schools Board of Trustees unanimously approved the increases Thursday at the recommendation of university officials, who argued they are needed to address inflation, meet workforce requirements and fund facility upgrades.

As a result, undergraduate room and board will jump by 2% at the Urbana-Champaign campus, 2.6% at the Chicago campus and 1.4% at the Springfield campus for new students in the 2021-22 school year. Student fees and assessments will also rise by 0.8% at the two most populous locations.

Trustees also voted to keep undergraduate tuition the same next year. Trustees approved a 1.8% tuition increase for Urbana-Champaign and Chicago and a 1% increase for Springfield before the pandemic, but the university covered the difference this fall using federal stimulus money, financial aid and private donations. Tuition was frozen between 2015 and 2019 for in-state undergraduates.

For the upcoming school year, standard undergraduate tuition for Illinois residents will continue to be $12,254 at the flagship campus, $10,776 in Chicago and $9,502 in Springfield. State law bars public universities from raising tuition on Illinois students during their four years as undergraduates, and the housing rates will not change for current students.

Public Health is a naturally interdisciplinary field that developed from essentially blending the emerging needs of social work and nursing.
