What Are The Suburbs Of Chicago

Chapter 6 Of Chicago Suburbs: Downtown Neighborhoods

Outside Chicago, suburbs are also struggling with surge in violent crime

The main downtown area is just seven blocks away from North Chicago River. On the other side, it sits ten blocks away from Lake Michigan .

The neighborhood is also known for being a museum without walls. If you look around the area, youll be amazed to see a plethora of public art, murals, monuments, and modern sculptures. It features the most popular artists of the 20th century, including Chagall, Picasso, Miro, Calder, Oldenburg and Moore.

The southern area is not as dense as expected. Vacant and undeveloped lands can be seen in the area, mostly along the river of Chicago.

Pilsen, one of the modern communities in this part of Chicagoland, has become the point of entry for people of different nationalities for over a century. When the first weekend of August comes, a festival called Fiesta del Sol is held for three consecutive days.

Suburbs Are Not Neighborhoods Neighborhoods Are Not Suburbs

This is a constant source of confusion. If someone asks where Im from and I say Chicago a typical response is what part?

If the person is from the city, I know this actually means what neighborhood? If theyre not, I know it usually what suburb? which is also a common non-sensical response to saying youre from Chicago.

When I lived in Hyde Park, Id say something like Hyde Park, its a neighborhood on the South Side, and Id get responses like oh so the suburbs?

But if I just say the city people then occasionally ask something like Oh so like by the Sears Tower? forgetting that Chicago is a huge city of three million people and almost none of us live near the Sears Tower . Which brings us to

What I Dont Love About Living In The City

I absolutely love love love our condo and I believe we have done so much to turn this 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom place into a space that feels like its truly home. But Id be lying if I didnt admit that we could use a bit more room. A backyard and some grass sounds pretty heavenly, especially on nice days! And while we adore all of our neighbors, it can sometimes feel like youre on top of one another. You feel bad having people over and being loud when there are other people in the building to consider.

Also, running errands in the city takes about 10x longer than in the suburbs. We will usually drive for errand days and getting around can be a bear. Not to mention parking can be a challenge in some places. Whenever Im out by Bridgets house, I feel like I can get so many errands done in no time at all!

Why I Live Where I Live

The 10 Worst Chicago Suburbs

After college, Finn and I moved around the midwest as I pursued my career in TV. We lived in Wisconsin for a few years, and then headed to St. Louis for a couple more. But I was always so eager to get a job in Chicago to head back home. My entire family lives in Chicago , so I wanted to settle down here to be close to them.

Chicago is divided into neighborhoods and each one is incredibly different. We live in East Village which is technically Ukrainian Village. Its only about a block away from Wicker Park, which is our favorite neighborhood in all of the city. We chose to live here because its close to the blue line , close to the heart of the city, close to the highway, and close to sooooo many amazing restaurants and shops.

Suburbs Are Not A Part Of Chicago

Chicago suburbs see 50% increase in homicides this year

They are separate cities or towns or villages or whatevers with their own governments . I understand why, for the sake of convenience, some people from suburbs may occasionally say theyre from Chicago.

I honestly dont mind if people from the suburbs want to say theyre from Chicago for conversational convenience. But its important for clarity across all conversations for people to understand the suburbs are not actually a part of the city.

Neighborhoods Are A Part Of Chicago

Like most large cities, Chicago has neighborhoods. These neighborhoods have names, and they are all still a part of Chicago. Some neighborhoods are centrally located and contain famous landmarks, like the Loop, Gold Coast, Streeterville, and River North.

Other neighborhoods are not at all centrally located and contain nothing notable to most people. Anyone know where Schorsch Village is? Well I do, but only because I grew up there.

Before I started blogging full-time, all of my day jobs were located in downtown Chicago. I love the feeling of being in the heart of the city with the hustle and bustle of people heading to work.
