Best Restaurant In Chicago Period Alinea
Chicagos only three Michelin star restaurant, Alinea has been around almost 15 years and still books up months in advance. The brainchild of acclaimed chef Grant Achatz who became one of the best chefs in the world despite battling tongue cancer, thats just one of their impressive feats. It was the first restaurant to pioneer the concept of prepaid ticketed reservations, pricing meals on a sliding scale based on date and time in order to show that dining is an experience akin to the theatre. The menu is as innovative as it is playful with everything from edible balloons to lobster and wagyu.
And The One Drink You Have To Have: Malrt
Malört is one of the nastiest liquors known to mankind. And the funny thing is once youve suffered a shot of it, you automatically want others to crush their taste-buds too. Maybe its the we survived camaraderie, maybe Chicagoans just like to watch people suffer. Whatever it is, the liquor isnt going anywhere anytime soon.
A Swedish immigrant created Malört and it was made in Chicago until the 70s . Fun fact: it was the only legal wormwood product sold in the U.S. until 2008. Its rancid taste has become a rite of passage here. Its been described as jägermeister heavily diluted in pondwater but less piney, and an unbearable, cringe-inducing bitterness that sticks with you for a worrying amount of time. Even the bottle itself warns its brutal to the palate.
I mean, who wouldnt want to experience this at least once?! Yeah, me neither. But since Ive suffered through it, so should you. And the tradition lives on!
Where to drink Malört in Chicago
Most bars in Chicago will proudly have a bottle of Malört for those willing to drink it, but if you want to be absolutely sure youll find it, heres a Malört Map to hunt it down.

Steak At Gene & Georgetti
Chicago is historically a meat-and-potatoes kind of town and as a result, many of the country’s top steakhouses reside here. When it comes to the classics, you cant do better than a steak at Gene & Georgetti, which opened back in 1941.
They source only the highest quality American beef, graded in the top 2% for marbling and texture, and transform it into one of the best Chicago foods by wet-aging their steaks, then broiling them to seal in flavor.

Chicago Deep Dish Pizza
This one tops the list because lets face it, its one of the main reasons to visit Chicago in the first placeif not the main reason! No dish is more iconic Chicago than a deep-dish pizza.
What is it about the famous Chicago deep-dish pizza that makes it so irresistible? The thick, buttery crust?
The gooey, delicious strings of melted cheese that stretch from every gigantic slice? Or maybe its that zesty, perfectly-seasoned tomato sauce?
Suffice it to say that the combination of all three is enough to make anyones mouth water. My personal favorite spot for deep-dish is Pequods Pizza, but Lou Malnatis, Giordanos, Burts Place, and the Art of Pizza are delicious and popular spots to try.
Carnitas At Carnitas Don Pedro
PilsenTo claim that Don Pedros carnitasknuckle-sized chunks of luscious pork, rife with crunchy chicharrón morsels, ambrosial caramelized fat, and pulpy shredded meatstands as Chicagos most coveted taco filling would be a grave understatement. Chicago Food And Travel Part 1
I am stubbornly ignoring all the signs of the arrival of fall. We are back in a heat spell after a few cold days so I am back in my capris and sandals, at least for today. We have to enjoy and prolong every last bit of summer warmth and think of all the good times we had these last months. Which reminds me, I have not gotten around to showing you some photos of my trip to Chicago back in July!
Ceramic tile of the Chicago station on the L subway system
Yes, I chose a big urban metropolis as my vacation destination. For one, I am definitely a cultural traveler. I have always wanted to visit Chicago and it was pretty much the last major American cosmopolitan city I had yet to see. It is brimming with art, culture, fine restaurants, architecture, science, huge parks, jazz and miles of sandy beaches. I know I was shocked too! Chicago is right on Lake Michigan and there are over 30 beaches. Enjoy a little taste of this city through its attractions and delicacies, in 2 parts.
OK so when I mentioned local delicacies I was lying a bit. Two out of the three Chicago specialties are junk food: the Chicago style hot dog and the deep dish pizza. I am not saying they are not good, but its not high end. In case you are curious the third one is Italian beef.

Flag And Municipal Device
The flag of Chicago consists of four red stars and two blue stripes on a white background. The stars represent events in the history of the city â the establishment of Fort Dearborn in 1803, the Chicago Fire in 1871, the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, and the Century of Progress Exposition in 1933. The stripes represent the North and South branches of the Chicago River. The flag is very popular in the city, both for its bold design and as a sign of civic pride.
Less well-known is the Chicago municipal device, a symbol that looks like the letter Y inside a circle. According to the Municipal Code of Chicago, the device is “for use by the varied unofficial interests of the city and its people”. Its design is inspired by the confluence of the North, South, and main branches of the Chicago River at Wolf Point. The municipal device can be seen in various places around the city â for example on the marquee of the Chicago Theatre.

Most places serve thick under-salted flour-laden clumps. Haires, however, purveys a light, golden crispy battered and butterflied shrimp so addictive, it can be eaten like popcorn. Though it needs no celebrity endorsement, Chance the Rapper has been spotted at this Southside gem.
