Our listener-supported funding model gives WBEZ the capacity to create our news and programming, drive our growth and secure our future.
The primary funding to power our service comes from listeners: we are 60 percent listener supported, with approximately 86,000 members making mostly modest, affordable individual donations. Major philanthropic gifts from donors and foundations provide a catalyst to fund our substantial investments. And, support from community partners and organizations provide sponsorship of our programming.
Our Mission Is At The Heart Of Wbez Chicago
We fulfill our mission at WBEZ by serving as a cornerstone of the public conversation as a central pillar of our civic community and by reasserting ourselves as the heart of innovation within public media.
We amplify the public conversation by telling the stories that matter stories that provoke thought, entertain, capture emotion and inspire action.

Extending The Gap Year After High School Beyond Kids Of Means
They will get to take a trip of a lifetime during a gap year after high school for free.
As part of a partnership with Chicago Public Schools, an organization called Global Citizen Year will send the four students to a foreign country next year to live with host families and work in schools, farms or health clinics.
The Oakland, California-based organization says the experience costs $32,000, but these students are getting full scholarships.
The partnership came about after city and school district leaders announced a new requirement that graduates must develop a plan for life after high school. The policy, which doesnt go into effect until 2020, allows for students to take a gap year.

Poor Ux Invasive To Phone Usage
The new app is disappointing. Knowing Id have an aversion to the known comforts of the old version – being someone whos used it daily for 4+ years – I wanted to give it some time and despite trying for an open mind its hard not to feel the app was not only developed by folks who didnt use the app, but its also absent basic developer app considerations & standards for users: 1. The app audio does not stop when I answer phone calls which is extraordinarily disruptive and dangerous if a call were an emergency. At a minimum its disorienting and creates unprofessional chaos on ad hoc work calls.2. I cannot use my phone video function while using the app. It blocks/glitches the record button. 3. Audio does not stop playing when I take my headphones out out of the jack. 4. Navigating to previous hours to listen or view whats upcoming used to be a simple swipe on a carousel. Now its a confusing series of unnecessary swipes with things nested nonsensically in various submenus. Sad UX. 5. Still no ability to stream to a bluetooth speaker.
