Pride Storytelling With Chicago Public Library
Chicago Public Libraries are introducing virtual storytelling events for children throughout the month, starting this Thursday at 11 a.m.
The events will take place over Zoom with free registration. CPL asks that participants register at least 24 hours in advance.

No Parade But Chicago Pride Fest Has Plenty To Offer All Weekend
CHICAGO Chicago Pride Fest kicks off this weekend.
There will be no parade this year but the fest is packed with events. Mya and Debbie Gibson are among the performers.
The Pride Parade, traditionally held on the last weekend in June, was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. In May of 2021, organizers announced the parade would be held on Oct. 3. But last month it was announced the parade would be canceled again for healthy and safety reasons.
Celebrating pride is so important, he said. We wanted people to build, to come out express themselves, to be able to celebrate what we have in our community and also remember that there are so many communities where people dont have the ability to live their lives as who they are.
Many restaurant and bar owners are checking vaccine cards before entry.
Organizers said they are working in conjunction with the Chicago Department of Public Health to offer vaccines and Covid education. Festival goers also have the opportunity to to get a Covid test if they choose.
The festival runs through Sunday.
Chicago Pride Parade Cancelled For 2021
PrideChicago announced the the cancellation of the 2021 Pride Parade on Wednesday, Sept. 1.
The announcement was made in a letter sent to Chicago-area media.
Tim Frye, the 2021 parade coordinator, said that PrideChicago had hoped it would be safe to have such a large event in October, expecting broad vaccination and general reopening after the pandemic. That has not happened.
To use the words of a song from the 60s: You Cant Always Get What You Want we really wanted and hoped that there could be a parade in 2021, said Frye. We dont feel, though, that we can do it safely for everyone in the parade and the people watching. We must cancel the parade for the second year.
The 2022 Chicago Pride Parade has been scheduled for June 26, 2022.
The Chicago event is the latest Pride and LGBTQ celebration to be cancelled for 2021. Evansville, Ind., cancelled their in-person Pride just last week. Other events such as International Mr. Leather and Milwaukee Pride Fest have also been cancelled over the past year.

Chicagos Role In The Gay Rights Movement
First American gay-rights group founded here: In 1924, postal clerk Henry Gerber formed the Society for Human Rights. He was soon arrested for being gay. He was never convicted, but the publicity led to his firing for conduct unbecoming a postal worker. The group quickly disbanded. In 2015, Gerbers home at 1710 N. Crilly Court in the Old Town Triangle neighborhood was designated a National Historic Landmark.
First Gay Pride Parade in the U.S.: More a march than a parade, the citys Gay Liberation Movement staged its first rally and procession as part of Gay Pride Week on June 27, 1970. A short Tribune story the next day said 150 people listened to speakers in Bughouse Square before walking to the Civic Center where they formed a chain around the Picasso statue and shouted, Gay power to gay people.
Chicagos march preceded parades in New York City, Los Angeles and other cities by one day.

DOWNTOWN Chaka Khan, Tiësto and Betty Who are set to perform at Pride in the Park, an LGBTQ-friendly music festival returning to Grant Park next month after being canceled last year by the pandemic.
The two-day festival will be held June 26-27 at Grant Parks Butler Field, 100 S. Lake Shore Drive, and feature a diverse lineup of musicians, DJs and drag performers.
Chaka Khan will headline Pride in the Park with producer Gryffin and EDM artist Tiësto.
Other musicians include Australian American singer Betty Who, local queer DJ Derrick Carter and Tracy Young, an LGBTQ community member whos the first woman to receive a Grammy for best-remixed recording.
Pride in the Park will also feature a variety of drag performances, including from local RuPauls Drag Race stars Denali Foxx, The Vixen and Naysha Lopez. Other local drag performers include Tenderoni, Miss Toto, CircuitMOM and Jo MaMa.

Chicago Pride Parade Nations Third Largest Postponed
Organizers hope to hold the parade in late summer or fall.
Chicagos LGBTQ Pride Parade, the third largest in the nation, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis.
We are sad to announce that the annual Pride Parade will not take place this year on June 28, parade coordinator Tim Frye said in a statement issued Wednesday. We announce this postponement in the hope that conditions will allow the parade to take place later this summer or early fall.
Safety is the first priority for our participants in the parade the hundreds of thousands of spectators as well as all the city agencies and independent contractors that work so hard to make the parade a success every year, he continued. Even if rescheduling the 2020 parade is not possible, the Pride Parade will be back in 2021 and for years to come, he said. Chicagos parade trails only New Yorks and San Franciscos in terms of size.
Also, the citys Pride Fest, a street festival set for the weekend before the parade, has been tentatively rescheduled for Labor Day weekend, said officials with the Northalsted Business Alliance, which organizes the event. The group is working on virtual programming for June and still plans to hold another popular street fair, Northalsted Market Days, August 8-9.
New York and San Francisco have already canceled their Prides due to the health situation, and organizers are looking at ways to celebrate online. Los Angeles has postponed its event.

Chicago Pride Fest Announces Dates For 2021 Return
Chicago Pride Fest will return for its 20th annual two-day celebration in October, organizers announced.
The LGBTQ+ street festival, organized by Northalsted Business Alliance, will take place Oct. 1 and 2, concluding just before the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday, Oct. 3.
While Pride Fest usually takes place in June, this year’s mid-fall celebration was necessary because of COVID-19, organizers said.
“Northalsted celebrates pride year-round a fall festival will be no less extravagant and celebratory,” said Northalsted President Ramesh Ariyanayakam in a statement.
The festival welcomes all ages, and a $15 donation is suggested.
The street festival will be located on Halsted Street from Addison to Grace Street. Hours are 4 p.m.-10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 1, and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sat. Oct. 2.
Performer lineup, schedule details and vendor application information will be announced soon, the organization said.

Halsted Street between Addison and Grace will close at 11:59 PM on Thursday and will reopen at 4:00 AM on Monday. Street closures will also impact Waveland between Halsted and Broadway, as well as Bradley Place.
Parking RestrictionsNO PARKING will be allowed from 8:00AM Thursday 9/30, through 11:00 AM Monday, 10/4 on the following streets:800-858 W. BRADLEY PL.
Vehicles left on the street will be ticketed and towed at owners expense.
No access to Halsted Street surface parking lots or parking garages beginning Thursday at 11:59pm through Monday at 4:00am.
The Whole Foods parking lot will remain open for customers, with access on Waveland west of Halsted during regular operating hours.
Program For Chicago Gay Pride
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Chicago Pride 2021 will be a little different, with a split schedule between the popular Pride in the Park and the iconic Chicago Pride Parade. Pride in the Park will be going ahead this June, on the weekend of June 26 to 27. The two day event will run from 3pm to 10pm each night, and will take place in Grant Park.
You can expect all the usual entertainment that Pride in the Park has become known for, including drag kings and queens, popular DJs, and great live performances. Headline acts include Grammy winning, Tiësto, Iconic singer Chaka Khan, and several drag performers from the RuPaul alumni including ice-skating legend Denali Foxx, Alyssa Edwards, and Chicago’s own Traci Ross. Pride Hiit Workout: Fundraiser
New to pride celebrations this year, trainer Austin Head will lead a total body high-intensity interval training workout on June 6 at 10 a.m. at Replay Lakeview, complete with $10 bottles of champagne, $3 Bud Light beers and brunch food.
